Yukarı Düden Şelalesi

Where the Düden river surfaces from underground and drops over travertines, with the surrounding area laid out as a picnic ground. Its defining feature is the natural cave gallery you can walk through behind the falls.

Unlike the Lower Düden that drops into the sea, Upper Düden lies north of the city in the Kepez district. Here the water emerges from the underground karst system and falls about 15 metres over travertine ledges. The plane and willow trees around it keep the area noticeably cool in summer.

The most memorable part of a visit is the cave gallery running behind the waterfall. Walking the path carved into the rock, you watch the water flow past like a curtain from the inside — a cool, damp and loud experience. Coming out of the gallery you meet the falls head-on.

The park has walking paths, bridges and tea gardens. Being close to the centre (about 10 km) makes it ideal for a half-day break, and it is far more impressive in spring when the flow is at its highest.

Tips

  • The cave gallery floor is wet and slippery; wear non-slip shoes.
  • Water flow peaks in spring and can drop by late summer.
  • Don't confuse it with Lower Düden; they are different places.
