Termessos Antik Kenti

A Pisidian city built at 1,050 metres inside Güllük Dağı National Park. Its natural defences made it one of the rare cities Alexander the Great besieged but failed to capture.

Termessos is Antalya's most unusual ancient city. Unlike other ruins it sits not by the sea but on a steep slope of the Taurus mountains, inside pine forest. That position made it nearly impregnable: in 333 BC Alexander the Great laid siege and had to withdraw without taking it. Ancient sources call it the "eagle's nest" for this reason.

The most striking structure is the theatre for 4,200 people, carved at the edge of a precipice. The view behind the stage building — mountain ranges and a deep valley — creates an effect no other ancient theatre in Türkiye can match. Beyond it you can see the agora, gymnasium, cisterns and the remains of the Temple of Zeus Solymeus.

The necropolis is a separate experience: hundreds of stone sarcophagi scattered across the slope, most toppled by earthquakes and strewn through the forest. This unrestored disorder gives Termessos the atmosphere of a ruin still waiting to be discovered. Wild goats are a common sight; the area is also a national park.

Tips

  • The climb from the car park is steep and rocky; allow 30–40 minutes.
  • Trainers, water and a hat are essential; there are no shops on site.
  • The altitude keeps it cooler than the centre even in summer; mornings are easiest.
